PHOTOGRAPHY

I took my first photography class in 2012 because my mom said I needed a hobby that didn't involve words. For years after, I took it quite seriously. planned trips around places I wanted to photograph, lugged around an extra backpack filled with lenses and filters, and obsessed over being in the right place for sunrise and sunset. I focused mostly on landscapes but along the way also indulged my love for the uncanny by taking unsettling self-portraits and pictures of creepy dolls.

But as technology improved, it started to seem silly to spend so much time and energy fussing with f-stops, and processing raw images in Lightroom when I could just snap a picture on my cell phone, make a couple quick edits, and end up with something equally Instagrammable. And for the past few years, that's what I did.

I'm dusting off my DSLR now because I miss the effort it requires. I like the idea of taking the time to produce photographs of high enough quality that they could be giant wall prints. There's also something meditative about scouting locations, setting up the tripod, and trying to get the composition and lighting just right. It feels like I'm paying proper homage to the nature I love so much.

I'm looking forward to exploring new landscapes, and I've got some other projects planned, including an illustrated short story involving vintage Fisher Price Little People. I'm also in the process of gathering my photographs into a new portfolio.  In the meantime, you can check out my old photo blog.
